Dedham Youth Travel Team Hockey Tryout Policy
The purpose of tryouts is to evaluate a player's skating ability, hockey skills and commitment to teamwork in order to place him or her within a team that will provide the best environment for improving their self-confidence and enjoyment of the sport of ice hockey. The tryouts for DYH travel teams (Squirts, Peewee, Bantams, Girls U12 and U14) will be held the week of March 7, 2022. Tryout dates and times will be posted on the Dedham Youth Hockey website. In order to tryout, a player must be paid in full for the 2020/21 season. A nonrefundable tryout fee of $100.00 must be made before your child can participate in tryouts ($25 for Mite Travel). Payment plans are available. Upon accepting a roster spot on a team your initial deposit of $250 will be due by May 1, 2022.
Evaluations: A standardized scoring system will assess skating ability and hockey skills at each level during scheduled tryout sessions. In addition to their on-ice performance, the players will be watched for their teamwork, work ethic, ability to follow instruction, and willingness to be a team player. Those who disrupt the tryout process inhibit the ability for others to perform, put forth a lackluster effort, or act in a manner detrimental to a positive team environment will impact their overall evaluation. Evaluation Guidelines Players will be evaluated on the following skills on standard scoring matrix:
• Skating Skills – Inside and outside edges; stopping; quick starts; transition forward to backward.
• Hockey skills – Puck control; shot; stick-handling skills; giving and receiving passes.
• Team work – Ability to cohesively work with teammates on ice
• Situational/Decision making – Ability to read developing play; anticipates opponent’s and teammate’s next move; positional hockey vs. pond hockey.
• Evaluation of previous season’s coaches. Team Selection Team selection will be based on the player ratings obtained in the tryouts and player evaluations from the 2020/21 coaches. Each player must tryout regardless of what team they were on the previous season. There are no guaranteed roster spots on a team based solely on what team you were on in the past. It is anticipated that teams will be selected by April 1. Parents will be notified of their player’s placement via the website and email from their coach.
